Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 9, 2026
Your privacy matters to us. readox is designed so that most of what it does happens locally in your browser. This policy explains what data we collect, what stays on your device, and how we handle the rest.
Consent
By installing the readox extension or using our website, you consent to this privacy policy. You can revoke access at any time by uninstalling the extension and, if applicable, canceling your subscription.
What stays on your device
The core of readox runs locally. The following data is processed entirely in your browser and is never sent to our servers:
- Page text and selections — Any text you read aloud is processed locally. Premium AI voices run on-device using a downloaded model. Your text does not leave your browser.
- Audio output — Speech audio is generated locally and played back in your browser. We do not store, transmit, or have access to any audio produced by the extension.
- Voice model — Pro users download a voice model (~80 MB) that is cached in your browser's storage. The model runs entirely on your device.
- Settings and preferences — Voice selection, playback speed, and other settings are stored in your browser's local extension storage.
- Browsing history — We do not track, collect, or have access to which pages you visit.
What we collect
We collect the minimum data necessary to provide account and subscription features:
- Account information — If you sign in (required for Pro only), we receive your Google account email, name, and profile photo. This is used to identify your account.
- Subscription status — Whether you have an active Pro subscription, your plan type, and billing period. Managed through Polar.sh.
- Usage counters — Aggregate counts of Pro features used per billing period (OCR pages processed, AI summaries generated, premium TTS characters). These are numerical counters only — we do not store the content.
Free users who never sign in have zero data collected by our servers.
Cloud-processed features
A small number of Pro features require server-side processing:
- OCR (image scanning) — When you scan an image, the image is sent to our API for text extraction. The image and extracted text are processed in-memory and are not stored after the response is returned.
- AI summarization — When you use Summarize mode, the text is sent to our API for summarization. The text and summary are processed in-memory and not stored.
Text-to-speech — the core feature — never sends your text to our servers, regardless of plan.
Payments
Subscriptions are processed through Polar.sh, which uses Stripe as its payment processor. We do not collect, store, or have access to your credit card number, billing address, or other payment details. All payment data is handled directly by Stripe under their privacy policy.
We receive from Polar.sh only: your subscription status, plan type, and billing period dates.
Data retention and deletion
Server-side data
- Account and subscription data is stored for the duration of your account.
- To delete your account data, cancel your subscription and email us at the address below. We will delete your account record within 30 days.
- Usage counters are retained across billing periods for account history.
Local data
- All local data (cached voice model, settings, authentication tokens) is stored in your browser's extension storage.
- You can clear this at any time by uninstalling the extension or clearing extension data in your browser settings.
Cookies
The readox website uses only essential cookies required for authentication. We do not use advertising cookies, analytics cookies, or tracking pixels. The extension itself does not use cookies.
Children's privacy
readox is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
Information security
We use commercially reasonable measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure authentication, and access controls on our infrastructure. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify users through the extension or by email. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
